(C 8.4 & I 8.4.7)。From the Concepts of Sustainable Forest Management to Reality: Practical Steps for PEFC Forest Management Criteria(C 8.4 & I 8.4.7).

PEFCProgramme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification,森林驗證認可計畫)與FSC (Forest Stewardship Council,森林經營委員會),同為全球兩大森林驗證系統。

8. Operation運營

8.4 Maintenance, conservation and appropriate enhancement of biological diversity in forest ecosystems.

8.4.7 The genetically-modified trees shall not be used.

Note: The restriction on the usage of genetically-modified trees has been adopted by the PEFC General Assembly based on the Precautionary Principle. Until enough scientific data on genetically-modified trees indicates that impacts on human and animal health and the environment are equivalent to, or more positive than, those presented by trees genetically improved by traditional methods, no genetically-modified trees will be used.

PEFC and FSC are the two biggest names in forest certification. So, what's the difference between these two systems? Are they asking forest managers to do completely different things to get certified? Let's dive into PEFC and see what it takes to get certified. 8. Operation

Preparation of possible information:

PEFC certification requires organizations not to use genetically engineered trees. The PEFC has adopted the precautionary principle, which states that in the absence of sufficient scientific evidence, precautions should be taken to avoid potential risks.

Therefore, organizations should prepare the following data:

1.         Provide proof of the origin of the tree species and ensure that the trees used are not genetically modified.

2.         Provide staff training records to demonstrate that employees understand and comply with the relevant regulations.

3.     If the organization has used GM trees in the past, the relevant monitoring plan and results should be provided.
